Also known as Service Station Over Easy. Recently featured in the Guardian.

This is one of the places I’ve always loved: Susie’s Cafe, South of Market at 7th St and Brannan. I have only visited it a few times, despite the fact that I lived right down the street from it fro almost three years and worked right next door for one.

The first thing that strikes one upon seeing it is the fact that it’s the offices and food mart of an old gas & service station. The service station is still there, with working service bays, and quite busy, incidentally.
The service station apparently makes up for the fact that they no longer have a food mart or office by having a mini-mini-mart in the diner itself. I’ve been fairly impressed with the traffic this little place generates, not in diners, but in cigarette and soda and lottery ticket sales.
Nonetheless, the friendly (amazingly perky and pleasant, even) ladies behind the counter whip up some tasty and enjoyable breakfast and lunch. You can’t beat their breakfast links and omelets, and Lunch specials are often on offer, including a meatloaf sandwich, and hot pastrami on rye. Delish.

The interior is great: simple decor in the rich colors of my decade of birth, with ample seating for morning gatherings. If only I knew any morning people at all…
