But still, I found it amusing today when I visited this absolutely fabulous little diner in Alamo Square, on Divisadero and Fulton which called itself a Soul Food Restaurant. Very conveniently placed, in fact, for my new home in Hayes Valley - I intend to return often. They did serve grits…

One cool thing which was especially endearing to me was the fact that they had absolutely no interest in uniformity for their coffee cups. The walls displayed miscellaneous coffee mugs from all occasions, places and eras, and so did the ones in which they actually served patrons’ coffee.

I ordered my usual eggs-over-medium and wheat toast and tomatos, and chose smoked links as my meat. Hard to get wrong, though some people do, but it was pretty good. The coffee kicked ass.

Better than the flavor, of course, was the prompt, attentive service and very fast turnover of the food. The servers made me feel tended-to without feeling rushed, the food came fast and the dish clearance and check as well.
But at the same time I did not feel like I was being shoved out bodily, and all were quite nice and gracious. And it was cheap.
They’ve got a service formula at this place that other diners would do well to mimic: prompt, efficient service that encourages fast turnover without having to do things like crank up the music or constantly come by asking “is there anything else” in an attempt to shove patrons out the door.
A few other notables were the sanitation score of 100%, an almost unheard-of achievement in older mom-and-pop diners, and the fact that the proprietors were quite amicable and friendly throughout my picture-taking.
