Glossary
Diner: Historically, the kitchen and dining room car on a passenger locomotive. The label is usually extended to include restaurants with similar simple, limited menus which prepare food on-site using fresh ingredients. Fast food and high-end “fine dining” establishments usually do not qualify. Also as a hangover from railroad times, a wide range of hours and diverse menu for travelers keeping different schedules is usually observed. Here at DOW, we require a “Diner” to be open early enough for breakfast on weekends before the rush, and on weekdays before a typical office or factory shift.
Hangover Dawn: Approx 10am-1pm on Saturday and Sunday. Basically the time at which alcoholic yuppies and hipsters finally wake-up and decide they will finally eat breakfast. Diners should be avoided during this window if they are anywhere near the environs plagued by the creative class.
